The Santiago Award
The Santiago Award
is named after the "Fisherman" character in Hemingway's Nobel prize winning novel
"The Old Man and the Sea" and exemplifies the characteristics of "El Campeon". It is given to an individual that has
devoted their time and energy to promote and enhance young apprentices and the Apprenticeship
Programs in the Southern States.
Outstanding Apprenticeship
Each Apprenticeship Program in the Southern States Conference District has at least one "Outstanding Apprentice"
to honor for his/her efforts during their training period. What better way to acknowledge their endeavors than
sending them to the Southern States Apprenticeship Conference to be honored by fellow Craft Panels.
Outstanding Apprentices are honored by fellow outstanding apprentices, Trustees, Coordinators,
Business Representatives and Contractors for all the Crafts brought together.
Honored in their individual Craft Panel Sessions, the first registered apprentice from each state
is honored by presenting his/her state flag at the Opening General Session. There will be a breakfast
for the newly selected apprentices and their families only, and an Awards Banquet to hear and see how
the honored apprentices have learned a professional trade, and how it will improve working conditions for centuries to come.
We encourage all training programs to include an outstanding apprentice to attend this informative and exciting conference!
Essay Contest
As part of the Outstanding Apprentice Award Program, each Apprentice must write a 200 word essay on
"What My Apprenticeship Has Meant to Me." Apprentices attending the Carpenters/Millwrights Panel
may use the same essay for both. Essays must be turned in
at the Apprentice Orientation. Prizes will be awarded at the Combined Panel Workshop on .
Each year a photo is included with a short biographical sketch of each Apprentice
in the Souvenir Program. For each apprentice attending, please complete the following
information below and include a (4" X 5") "tight head shot" in color or black and white.
Faxed photos are not acceptable. (No Polaroid's, please).
